Ryan was signed as a non-drafted free agent by Seattle Mariners scout Barry Holland in November 2000. He stayed with the Mariners organisation until he was acquired by Minnesota Twins in 2004. He returned to the Mariners in March 2005 and stayed here until 2010.
He made his Major League debut for Mariners against Cincinatti Reds on 22 June 2007.
On 9 December 2010 he signed with Houston Astros.
Ryan was a member of the silver medal winning Australian Baseball Team in the 2004 Athens Olympics and in 2006 was added to the Australian national baseball team for the 2006 World Baseball Classic.
Ryan joined the Canterbury Bankstown Vikings to play in the Sydney Major League in 2000/2001.
